“Newer Tax Types and Fees: What Will They Tax Next?”

Maniace of Sovos Compliance LLC will discuss newer tax types in various states and industries (both proposed and enacted) including data-specific taxes, EV-related taxes and fees, taxes and fees in the shared economy, delivery fees, hospitality and entertainment-related taxes and fees. They will also review challenges associated with each tax type as well as strategies that can be used to comply with regulations and customer inequities.

One of the hottest topics in state tax is also one of the hardest to understand: the proper treatment of various electronic services across 50 states. During this session, Sam and her co-speakers Kathleen S. Cornett of Alston & Bird, LLP and Andrew Yates of DoorDash will explore the taxability of different services across the country and explore how to properly source (and document) the receipts from those services.
After attending, participants will be able to:
- Define electronically delivered software vs. SaaS
- Identify states that currently impose sales and use tax on SaaS, including their nuances
- Identify home rule jurisdictions taxability vagueness (e.g. Colorado home rules) vs. clarity (e.g. Chicago)
- Recognize common SaaS exemptions and related documentation
- Identify other common SaaS sales and use tax issues
