Aaron L. Hammer, Chair of HMB’s Bankruptcy Group, joined Scott Sinclair on his podcast, The Winning Momentum, to discuss entrepreneurship and his legal career.
Discussing his background (6:50), Aaron shares that he grew up in his family’s business - always having the entrepreneurial bug. His father showed him how to run a successful business, giving Aaron the experience, knowledge and skills needed for entrepreneurship.
Scott and Aaron also discuss the differences and challenges that come with being an attorney and entrepreneur (19:00). Aaron discusses how his legal background and skillset intersect to both help clients and build successful companies.
“How do you juggle everything?” (29:40) Aaron says he tries to be available and present as much as he can be. “I have a good position where I can drive bankruptcy cases and still practice law effectively.”
Because there are not many bankruptcy cases or insolvency matters right now, Aaron looks for opportunities to incorporate HMB into his other businesses, including engaging attorneys at HMB to serve as legal counsel to his other companies (30:50).
With regards to the current state of our economy, Aaron does not expect we will see a lot of bankruptcies in the immediate future (53:50). “We might see an increase of workout activity as bankers start calling defaults, but the Federal Reserve has been so hands-off on their financial institutions that I haven’t seen lenders call on defaults in over a year.”
Wrapping up, Aaron shares his thoughts on the best way to change momentum (1:00:30). Aaron tells Scott, “Say yes. Say yes. Say yes. Lean in and don’t fight against the current you’re never going to survive. Lean in and let the invisible hand guide you.”
