Gay Marriage: A Split amongst the Circuits

On November 6^th, those fighting for the right to gay marriage across the entire U.S. were dealt a heavy blow when the U.S Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled against the practice of gay marriage in four states (Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee). The ruling causes a split amongst the federal circuits on the issue and, consequently, added pressure on the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the issue of gay marriage once and for all. In fact, in his article “Gay marriage ruling means high court review likely,” Dan Sewell of the Associated Press writes “Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had explained in a September speech in Minnesota that the lack of a split in the appeals courts made Supreme review of the issue unnecessary. But she said ‘there will be some urgency’ if the 6^th Circuit allowed same-sex marriage bans to stand.”  Stay tuned to our blog for further updates on this issue.
